The English National Ballet performing Nutcracker

A perfect Christmas treat.

The Sunday Express

A time-honoured tradition

The scene is Edwardian London. Windows are lit. Streets dusted with frost. And Clara receives a magical Nutcracker doll. The story that unfolds has become a Christmas classic for the ages – and once again, the London Coliseum provides the enchanting stage.

Performed by the English National Ballet, Nutcracker is a whirlwind trip across the city, and into worlds of wonder, snow and sugar plums. Accompanied by her Nutcracker prince, Clara battles the Mouse King, rides a hot-air balloon to a dreamlike land of puppetry, dancing her way through beautiful gardens – and back home to her father’s arms.

A powerful production

Over 100 dancers and musicians come together to tell this heart-warming tale, with Tchaikovsky’s original score performed live. Choreography by Wayne Eagling is confident yet delicate, technical yet lyrical. The dancers, energetic, athletic and precise. And after a sell-out season to over 70,000 people last year, this Christmas, Nutcracker promises to delight the young and old once more.

Food for thought

Extend the evening with pre-ballet drinks and nibbles in the London Coliseum’s American Bar. Sink into the wood-panelled interior for a Mediterranean-inspired selection of small plates, followed by a picture-perfect dessert that’s straight from the ‘Land of Sweets’.
