The Captain of Köpenick starring Anthony Sher

from 29/01/2013 to 04/04/2013

Event: The Captain of Köpenick starring Anthony Sher

Location: National Theatre, SE1

Anthony Sher stars in the title role of the 1931 German play The Captain of Köpenick by Carl Zuckmayer. The National Theatre is putting on a new English version by Ron Hutchinson, the only new play in its first season of the year.

The story is set in 1910 in a Berlin suburb, where Sher plays ex-convict caught in a bureaucratic maze trying to get identity papers in order to work after he is released from prison. Having no luck and after coming across a Prussian military uniform in a fancy dress shop and now masquerading as an army captain, he is able to take on the authorities, arresting the mayor and the council officers and confiscates the treasury without issue – “clothes make the man”.

The play is based on a true story of Wilhelm Voigt, who successfully impersonated a Prussian army officer in 1906 and took over the town hall.

Former Royal Shakespeare Company artistic director Adrian Noble will be making his National Theatre debut as director.

The Captain of Köpenick is on from 29 Jan – 4 Apr 2013.
