Event: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical
Location: Theatre Royal Drury Lane, WC2
Sam Mendes’s musical adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has its world premiere in June (with previews starting in May).
The 1964 Roald Dahl book tells the story of a poor boy who wins a ticket to see inside the mysterious Willy Wonka’s magical sweet factory. Willy Wonka will be played by the actor Douglas Hodge, (who recently starred in Cyrano de Bergerac on Broadway and will be seen on film this year alongside Naomi Watts as the butler in the Princess Diana biopic).
The Oscar-winning Mendes comes to the project after directing the Bond film Skyfall. Mendes is not new to musical theatre however, having directed productions such as the 1994 version of Oliver! on the West End stage.
Songs for the show are by Mark Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who previously collaborated on the musical Hairspray.
The production follows on from the success of another Roald Dahl musical adaption, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda, which has been West End hit, running for over a year.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory runs from 26 Jun-30 Nov 2013 (previews 18 May-24 Jun 2013) at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane & Matilda is on at the Cambridge Theatre in Covent Garden until 22 Dec 2013.
Charlie is suitable for children aged 7 and above, and Matilda from 6 years up, as recommended by the theatres.
