A black-and-white seascape showing a vast, calm ocean beneath a cloudy sky. A large, flat black rectangle hovers silently above the water, its shadow faintly reflected below, creating an otherworldly, abstract atmosphere.

Perrotin London art gallery

Perrotin is thrilled to welcome visitors to its first London art space in the heart of Mayfair, a vibrant and historic neighbourhood. The contemporary art gallery features 350 m2 of completely refurbished space in Claridge’s and offers a programme created together with its artists to coincide with the city’s major cultural events, such as Frieze London, where the gallery has participated since 2004.

Laurent Grasso: Orchid Island – 14 October to 20 December 2025

Perrotin London presents the first solo exhibition by Laurent Grasso, winner of the Marcel Duchamp Prize (2008) and internationally renowned for immersive works merging history, science, and fiction.

At the centre of the exhibition is Orchid Island (2023), a black-and-white film shot off the coasts of Taiwan, where lush tropical landscapes are overshadowed by a vast, levitating black rectangle. Accompanied by a hypnotic score by Nicolas Godin (Air), the work oscillates between utopia and dystopia, revealing hidden layers of history and questioning the construction of exoticism.

The same motif reappears in Studies into the Past and Tropical Scene, where a sheet of dark plexiglass embedded in the painting disrupts idyllic landscapes. The exhibition also includes works from the Anima series -palladium foil paintings and neon clouds that speak to the ambiguity of our time, where the sublime beauty of the sky coexists with the looming threat of environmental catastrophe.

Future Herbarium continues Grasso’s reflection on time through imagined botanical specimens recording post-disaster flora, while Panoptes takes form as a tree-like sculpture whose branches end in eyes - merging nature, mythology, and surveillance.

Together, these works articulate Grasso’s singular vision, where history coexists with projection, science with myth, and the real with the artificial.
